Loud Alarms, Drunken Parties, and One Writer’s Descent into Madness

I've had to remind people a few times that the scenes I write in games usually aren't based on my own experiences—just like the opinions expressed aren't necessarily my own. However, sometimes a scene does have a basis in reality.

I live in a small apartment building on the third floor, with just one more floor above me. I don't rent—I own this apartment. Though, of course, I'm still paying off the loan.

At first, I loved living here. But that feeling didn't last long.

I hate at least half the people in this building.

On the first floor, there's a guy who decided to renovate his entire apartment. The only notice was a pathetic scrap of toilet paper pinned to the bulletin board ("I'm starting an extremely thorough renovation, fuck you"). That alone would be stressful enough if the work were limited to weekdays—but no, he spends hours drilling into the walls on Sunday evenings. It's unbelievable how loud that sound is even here on the third floor! It's been over a month now.

Above me lives a woman with an alarm clock loud enough to wake the dead. Every morning—often before six—it jolts me awake. Even on Saturdays and Sundays. Sometimes, it doesn't just go off once but at 5:00, then 6:00, then 7:00, as if she's setting alarms for an army.

Across the hall from me lives a student. He loves throwing parties. They don't blast music anymore, but on weekends—and sometimes weekdays—he invites about twenty people over to get wasted and compete to see who can yell “fuck” the loudest. Sometime after midnight, this drunken battalion storms down the stairs and disappears into the city nightlife. Those nights, if I were religious, I'd pray they wouldn't decide to have an afterparty here. Like yesterday, when I woke up at 4am to the battalion marching sounds. At 4:20am (ooh!) I heard more yelling from the hallway, and actually stepped out to counter-yell at them. I must have been a sight—I was just wearing my underpants and my bluetooth sleep headphones. Well, at least I'm in shape, so it might have been somewhat threatening.

Did I mention I hate these people? Is this how people are everywhere, or did I just get super unlucky?

In Shadows of Betrayal (later in the game, after the demo ends), I just had to add a scene where the MC has a flashback to a particularly annoying neighbor, and how the hate they felt was so strong it became a physical sensation. That scene is a bit over-dramatized, but it does have a basis in reality.

Thought I'd share that.

In reality, I just needed to let off some steam somewhere, somehow. This way doesn't get me in trouble.

Man, that sounds unpleasant, to say the least. Nevertheless, it has made me a little curious about the hourly alarms of the lady above you.

I feel the ‘renovator’ the most. I have two neighbours who are always working on something. One of them lives across the road, and if he's not running a saw, it's his motorbike. In the summer he likes to turn it on-on-on, play with the gas or just leave it running for a few minutes before driving of. The other lives in the house behind mine, so we are practically wall to wall. When he's hammering and drilling, it's so loud that sometimes I expect a hole to open up in the wall, only to release my neighbour into my living room in a cloud of dust.
It's even worse in the summer when you let the window open at night to cool down the rooms and get through the heat of the next day, because there's also a dog at the end of the street that starts howling at the crack of dawn - and like your neighbours he doesn't care about weekends. I love dogs, but sometimes I hate dog owners.

On the other hand, the biker neighbour helped me quite a few times to get my broken car back on the road. And once, when it rained so hard that our little stream on the hill overflowed and the water came down with such force that it lifted the manhole covers into the air, he was the first to go out and help clear away the debris.
And the wall neighbour, a beefy, stern-looking guy, also likes to cook and garden and sometimes brings over fresh vegetables or a nice piece of cake. And when my mum had to go to the hospital, he came by to ask about her and tell me to come round if I needed anything. Which was kind of funny, because back then I didn't know his name and there was this brief, awkward moment where we just stared at each other before he finally asked, ‘You know who I am, right?’
Sure. Of course I do. ... What was your name again?

So in general, I think, I can consider myself lucky. I'm just very grouchy when I'm tired or trying to concentrate on something.

Hm ... Now I made it sound like I just left a comment, to say, that you, Jay, have it worse than I do.

... Sorry?

But seriously, I wish you the peace and quiet you want and need (and not just for the sake of the game 😉 ) and I hope it gets better. At least there's a chance that the renovator will get his apartment done soon and the party people will just ... move?

Still, the lady with the alarm clock ... I don't know what to make of her ...

Hi Mara!

I have wondered about the alarm clock lady myself. I can't figure out why someone would set alarms like that, except to intentionally annoy people. Perhaps she's also fed up with the party people and wants to make sure they never sleep in? Have mercy on the innocent bystander!

There's one thing (or a few, tbh) I didn't mention in my post—sometimes I also hear these sounds, probably coming from the alarm clock lady's apartment (it's hard to say for sure, since this is an older building, and noise travels weirdly). The sounds are kinda hard to describe, but I can't be sure if they're made by an animal or a person. It could be a dog... but it also sounds unsettlingly human. Honestly, that would fit her vibe, since nothing she does seems to make much sense. 😂 I could almost make a short horror game about my own life (if I kinda didn't already).

"I love dogs, but sometimes I hate dog owners." That's beautifully said, I couldn't agree more. It sounds like your neighbours have some redeeming qualities to balance out the annoying parts—I'm sure mine do too, I just haven't seen any. 😅

Ahaha, no need to apologize. 😁 We all have our struggles—I'm only glad if yours are lighter. Thanks for the well wishes, they're appreciated!

I'm not superstitious, but I still feel like I shouldn't say that things have already gotten a bit better. The renovation seems to have reached a stage where not so much drilling is required anymore, I complained to the property manager about the party people and they were sent a copy of the regulations, which actually did quiet them down a bit—now they only party on Fridays until midnight (we'll see how long that lasts). And they are students, so there's a chance they could move out once summer break hits.

Meanwhile, I'm working on Day 4 of Shadows of Betrayal—it's a major branching point with a lot of different outcomes, so progress is slow, but I want the choices to really matter.

Hello Jay!

Strange noises? Different alarms during the day? Maybe so she doesn't forget to feed the beast? Yeah, that does sound a bit like a horror story.

I'm not superstitious either, but it never hurts to knock on wood to be on the safe side ... ;)    (Nevertheless, it is good to hear that things have got a little better for you)

You're already working on day 4? You wrote that you have 5 days planned, right? Sounds like you've already made really good progress then. That's great!

Can't wait to see how the story develops and I'll definitely continue to keep an eye out for the game.

Keep it up!

Yes, I have five days plus an epilogue planned. I hope people will try the different routes, if I make the last one and a half days to be completely different depending on your choices. I've planned the game in a way that you probably won't get the true ending the first time you play, but need to try again and adjust things. But there are two other completely viable paths, and I think your perspective on the story could influence which ending you actually prefer.

There are also smaller mysteries inside the larger story arc that you can miss, even if you complete the game. Like for example, the surprise at the end of the demo—it's entirely possible to complete the game and never figure out who did it or what happened (yes, there is a larger story arc that this event is only a small part of 😉).

But hey, nice to know I already have at least one potential customer. 😉

I'm kidding, I might have a couple more, I hope. SoB actually participated in Steam NextFest, which was really good for me—my wishlists tripled during that time. Now they are pretty much on par with what Dreamwalker had before launch.
